.hk is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Hong Kong . It was introduced on January 3, 1990 and is administered by the Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation .

properties

After the introduction, a subscription right had to be proven in writing in order to register a .hk domain. It has only been possible for all natural and legal persons to register a .hk domain completely freely since 2004 ; in the meantime there is no longer any need for a place of residence or a branch . However, when registering, private individuals must provide their ID card number and date of birth, companies must provide their commercial register and VAT number.

The internationalized top-level domain . 香港 has been available since 2010 . There are also the second-level domains .com.hk (公司 .hk), .org.hk (組織 .hk), .net.hk (網絡 .hk), .edu.hk (教育 .hk) and . gov.hk (政府 .hk) and .idv.hk (個人 .hk). The support of Chinese characters was announced at the ICANN conference in mid-2010 and introduced simultaneously with .cn and .tw , so that the entire Chinese-speaking area was covered.

meaning

.Hk has been one of the most popular top-level domains worldwide for years. However, .hk is also known for the spread of cybercrime : According to a 2008 analysis by McAfee , one in five websites was classified as questionable. In the following year, .hk was still one of the most dangerous top-level domains.

In September 2008, reports attracted international attention that the .hk registry should be nationalized.
