.in

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.in is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for India . It was introduced on May 8, 1989 and is administered by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI for short, about National Internet Exchange Point of India ), commonly referred to as INRegistry . The Indian subsidiary of Afilias is responsible for technical operations in 2005 . In September 2017, 1,809,893 domains were registered.

development

According to official information, around 6,000 to 7,000 .in domains were registered at the end of 2004. In order to give the top-level domain greater weight and to promote its distribution, INRegistry announced that it will largely liberalize the award criteria. From now on, the ending should be able to be used by everyone at home and abroad without any particular restrictions. In fact, this measure increased the number of .in domains to 75,000 in April 2005. In September 2005 it was 130,000, in November 2006 the mark of 200,000 domains was broken. At this point in time, 37 percent of all .in domains were registered to people outside of India, with the USA and Germany leading the way.

properties

The award criteria were last changed in January 2005. Since then, every natural or legal person has been allowed to register an .in domain without having to show a place of residence or a branch in India. The administrative contact person does not have to come from India either. After only third-level domains were previously registered, addresses on the second level have also been possible since then. The endings on the second level such as .co.in for companies or .edu.in for educational institutions were retained.

.In has been supporting so-called internationalized domain names since 2011 . The top-level domain itself is available in a total of seven variants, which cover all languages recognized by the constitution of India . In total, an .in domain can be between three and 63 characters long. A special feature compared to other top-level domains is that the registry reserves the right to transfer a domain to another owner at any time, if the government of India so requests.

particularities

The domain dlgwe.in is used by the German Agricultural Society to refer to the test results (wine profile, origin, analysis), producer and purchase options on the label on the back of the wine bottle as a shortlink or QR code .
