.iq is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Iraq .

history

The extension was delegated to the Alani Corporation on May 9, 1997 , but initially not actively used. It was only in October 2002, which was the root zone by name server adds for .iq so that the domain could be used in principle. However, the so-called Tech-C (technical contact person) of the domain, Bayan Elashi, was arrested in December 2002 and convicted in 2004 together with InfoCom , the parent company of the Alani Corporation , for violating the US export ban for Libya . Bayan Elashi has also been shown to have connections to the radical Islamic Hamas and thus to support terrorism and money laundering .

During the Iraq war in 2003 .iq was de facto switched off at the ICANN's admission by the USA. It was not until June 2004 that the interim government of Iraq turned to ICANN to initiate the necessary measures for the introduction of .iq. Then asked Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to the end of the year officially to the award of .iq to the National Commission on Communications and Media ( National Communications and Media Commission ). The negotiations between ICANN and the new registry were ended in July 2005, so that .iq could be put back into operation.

Award

Addresses are only registered on the third level, even if there are some addresses on the second level. Only Iraqi citizens and businesses have the right to register an .iq address. However, the use of the domain is mainly limited to state institutions.

In 2003, there were plans .iq targeted as an abbreviation for intelligence quotient to market and to finance the reconstruction of Iraq from the income. At that time, the registry wanted to follow the example of .ws , which was advertised as an abbreviation for website .
