.mt is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Malta . It was introduced on December 2, 1992 and is administered by the Network Information Center Malta ( NIC Malta for short ).

The ending .mt may only be used by companies with a direct connection to Malta, although this does not require a branch in the country. The domain must exactly match the company name . If it is a registered trademark , a copy of the corresponding certificate must be submitted when registering . NIC Malta also requires you to provide your VAT identification number .

The registry expressly reserves the right to delete incorrectly registered .mt domains without warning. Due to the restrictive allocation criteria, the top-level domain is not widely used internationally; for example, in June 2004 only around 2,250 .mt domains were registered.

The extension .gov.mt can only be used by the government of Malta .
