.name is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). It was introduced on August 17, 2001 and is primarily intended for use by private individuals. Verisign is responsible for administration and technical operations .

history

In August 2001 the IANA announced that it wanted to introduce a new top-level domain with .name. A registry was then sought, and the Global Name Registry (GNR) based in London prevailed.

This in turn was bought with effect from October 1, 2008 by Verisign , which previously managed the most popular top-level domain .com , for example . Although GNR still exists as a company, .name is now officially administered by the parent company.

The operational registration of .name was possible from 2002. Initially, only third-level domains were offered ( e.g. hans.mueller.name ), which was repeatedly criticized by registrars and customers. GNR, on the other hand, wanted to prevent a fair distribution of .name domains and the massive domain grabbing of particularly memorable and valuable short domains with this approach . The registry only changed its guidelines in 2004 and has since allowed second-level domains to be placed.

In September 2007, the registry was heavily criticized for introducing a fee for Whois queries . The fear was expressed that this could make the top-level domain .name particularly attractive to fraudsters. Global Name Registry, on the other hand, stated that the fee obligation was mandatory due to European data protection law.

properties

A .name domain can be between three and 63 characters long. Hyphens are possible, but not at the beginning or at the very end and not in the third and fourth positions, as these are blocked by Punycode . The use of internationalized domain names is possible. A .name address is assigned in real time and usually only takes a few hours.
