.nl is the country-specific top-level domain for the Netherlands . It was introduced on April 25, 1986 and is administered by the Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN for short) based in Arnhem . With more than 6 million registered domains .nl is the fourth most popular country-specific top-level domain after .cn , .de and .uk .

properties

In total, a .nl domain can be between two and 63 characters long. Since January 2008, pure numeric domains have also been possible, with the registry carrying out a two-week sunrise period for the introduction in December 2007 with the support of Deloitte . Difficulties arose during the allocation, as two registrars were allocated a disproportionately large number of addresses. The SIDN then allocated around 4,000 disputed digit domains by lot .

Initially, only people with a place of residence or a branch in the Netherlands could register a .nl domain. That changed on October 1st, 2009: Since then, the registry has offered an option that allows foreigners to use the SIDN's postal address as a forwarding item in order to register a .nl domain by specifying this.

The SIDN has been offering a quarantine procedure since September 6, 2008 : If a .nl domain was accidentally deleted, the previous owner can register it again within 40 days. The deleted domain remains blocked for other interested parties until this period has expired. The arbitration procedure , which can be invoked in the event of a dispute between two people over a .nl domain, is based on the procedure of the Belgian registry DNS Belgium for .be domains. It is processed completely electronically, the costs amount to 1,500 euros for up to five addresses.

meaning

In August 2012, .nl reached five million registered domains. At that time, .nl was one of the three most popular country-specific top-level domains, after .de and .uk . 21 percent of all Dutch people had their own .nl domain. Only during the economic crisis from 2008 to 2012 did .nl record a significant drop in registered domains.

Since 2008 EuroDNS offers the possibility to register domains under .co.nl . Although these are marketed as third-level domains , this is not an official address range, as made clear by the SIDN. Due to the more liberal award criteria, the domain is still widespread.

By the end of 2014, around 5.5 million domains had been registered under the top-level domain .nl, which brought the domain ending in fifth place in the popularity ranking of country-specific domain extensions. Two years ago, the top-level domain even took third place, but was eventually overtaken by .uk , .cn and .tk . However, there are 0.3 domains for every inhabitant of the Netherlands, a remarkable density. In comparison, in Germany there are only 0.2 domains per inhabitant.
