.pl is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Poland . It was introduced on July 30, 1990 and is operated organizationally and technically by Naukowa i Akademicka Sieć Komputerowa (NASK) based in Warsaw . The ending .pl is one of the fastest growing ccTLDs at all, so the number of registered addresses increased e.g. B. in 2009 by more than 25 percent. However, growth slowed sharply in the following years and could soon turn into a decline.

properties

In total, a .pl domain can be between three and 63 characters long and is usually assigned within five days. Since 2004 not only alphanumeric characters , but also umlauts and other special characters of the Polish language can be used - the majority of European domain registrars support this function. Any natural or legal person can become the owner or administrative contact ( Admin-C ) of a .pl domain; a residence or branch in Poland is not necessary.

The top-level domain .pl is one of only eight extensions that have supported so-called Domain Name Tasting (DNT for short) since 2007 . In the course of this, the registry enables you to check how many visitors regularly visit a domain before registering. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the expected income from the address. However, the offer cannot be booked automatically; interested parties must contact the registration office directly.

second level

In addition to .pl, numerous second-level domains are available, which are aimed at special target groups:

  • .biz.pl for companies as an alternative to .biz
  • .com.pl for companies as an alternative to .com
  • .info.pl for general information, similar to .info
  • .net.pl for network- related content, similar to .net
  • .org.pl for organizations and authorities, such as .org

The same liberal award criteria apply to these endings as to the top-level domain .pl itself. B. private individuals can also order a domain under .com.pl.

criticism

In mid-2009, the registry of .pl domains came under fire after a loss of 3.2 million euros became public. The reason for this was speculation with FOREX certificates, which fell sharply in value in the wake of the global financial crisis . Since the total budget of the organization is only 16 million euros, the loss meant a massive cut and also meant that the previous director had to resign.
