.se is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Sweden . It was introduced on September 4, 1986 and is administered by the Internet Infrastructure Foundation , headquartered in Stockholm .

properties

A .se domain can contain between two and 63 characters. The assignment is fully automated and usually within a few minutes. However, the registry requires private individuals to provide their ID number and date of birth and companies to provide their VAT identification number and an entry in the commercial register when registering a new .se domain. In addition to the possibility of using alphanumeric characters , the possibility of internationalized domain names was created in July 2007 . In addition to Swedish and characters from the languages were Finnish , Tornedalfinnish , Yiddish , Romani and Sami are used that used in the country by a minority and are recognized by the state. Also, Norwegian , Danish , Icelandic and Faroese are supported ever since.

The top-level domain is one of the few addresses that an arbitration board has set up for disputes over .se domains. Since March 2011, the registry has even been offering an accelerated procedure in order to bring about an out-of-court settlement between two parties within ten instead of 30 days.

Controversy

In September 2009 it became known that the state regulatory authority had issued an instruction to the registry to check the interested party before registering a domain with the term bank . The instruction was harshly criticized publicly because it was seen as the first step in censoring the allocation of .se domains.

At The Pirate Bay's instigation, a signature campaign against the measure was launched. Nevertheless, the registry has publicly confirmed that it does not want to delete the organization's domain. Whether there is a copyright infringement or some other violation of Swedish law must first be examined by a regular court.

In 2009 the IIS also came under fire because all .se domains were not accessible for a few hours on October 12th. The reason was an error in the domain name system .
