.si

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.si is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Slovenia . It was introduced on April 1, 1992 and is administered by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES, Research and Science Network Slovenia ).

history

At the beginning, .si belonged to the so-called restricted top-level domains : only companies based in Slovenia with a branch there and international organizations of which Slovenia is a member could register a .si domain. The registration office ARNES acted simultaneously as a domain registry and a domain registrar .

In the course of the country 's accession to the EU , the restrictions on .si were also largely lifted: In April 2005, new guidelines came into force that also allowed foreign private individuals and companies to use it. In addition, the activities of ARNES were limited to that of a network information center , domains could only be registered via accredited web hosts .

In 2010 the award criteria were changed again. The top-level domain since then supports the use of non-alphanumeric characters of the languages of Slovenian , Italian , Hungarian , Croatian and German . Although internationalized domain names under .si are basically possible, they are not supported by every registrar.
