A-Werk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the perspective of the German fortifications in the 1930s, an A-Werk was a work of construction strength A. A work was defined as an independently defendable fortress with mechanical equipment for air and energy supply.

Due to their location and / or armament, A plants should fulfill particularly important tasks in a line of defense. They could not only be built as carriers for infantry weapons such as machine guns or light grenade launchers, but also for artillery and anti-tank weapons. In the east fortifications (later east wall ) they were planned in the so-called Oder-Warthe-Bogen , but never completed. They would also have been used in the western fortifications (later Siegfried Line ) if the development and expansion according to the plans from 1937 and early 1938 had not been interrupted by the Limes program from May 1938 . Among other things, the construction of two such A-plants was planned in the “Weißenburger Senke” near Bad Bergzabern .
