The Teletype Model 33 was a teleprinter introduced by the Teletype Corporation around 1963 and produced until 1981 . It was a simplified and cheaper version of the model 35 high-performance teleprinter.

Among users, sometimes even in the documentation of computer manufacturers such as Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) or in sales, for example by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems , the model was referred to as the ASR-33 , a deviation from the manufacturer's name. Actually, the abbreviation ASR only stands for one of three variants in which the Teletype Model 33 was available:

  • 33 ASR, ( A utomatic S end and R eceive): Fully equipped for sending and receiving with keyboard, as well as built-in tape reader and punch
  • 33 KSR ( K eyboard S end and R eceive): With keyboard, but without paper tape reader and punch
  • 33 RO ( R eceive O nly): Only for reception, therefore without keyboard, tape reader and punch

The printing mechanism used a cylindrical type head on a movable carriage. This enabled ten characters to be printed per second. The characters of the ASCII character set were available for this. The 8-hole punch tape reader and punch of the ASR variant also worked at a speed of ten characters per second.
