Martha sees herself as a “camp mother” who comforts and helps all men and women in the camp. She has a deeper feel for Jim. Jim returns the same day Fannie arrives at camp. He sees Fannie in the ballroom and falls in love with her. Martha learns of Fannie's conquest and tries to save Jim from becoming entangled with her because she believes she is unworthy of him. Jim tells her that Fannie would be better off if someone really loved her.

Jim and Fannie take a trip on horseback. When Fannie's horse passes, she falls to the ground and is injured. Jim brings her to Martha, who, although she regards her as her rival, nurses Fannie back to health. Martha discovers how loving Fannie really is, Jim gives up and Jim lives happily ever after with Fanny.
