Setting time

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The setting time is a term used in adhesive technology and is the period of time that an adhesive needs to achieve the strength required for intended use, or the time that the adhesive needs to change from a liquid to a solid state. If pressure is built up during the gluing process, the setting time ends when the pressure is released. With some adhesives, a post-setting time is required before further processing until the final strength is reached. After the setting time, the adhesive has reached its internal strength, the cohesion .

In reaction resin glue is also called curing.

Some setting times of glues (depending on the room climate and the nature of the parts to be joined):

  • PVAC glue (also white glue, wood glue): up to 1 hour
  • Melamine resin glue : at 20 ° C up to 1 hour, at 140 ° C a few seconds
  • Phenolic resin glue: cold curing up to 4 hours, hot curing at 90–140 ° C approx. 5 to 10 minutes

Also, the time for solidification of building materials such as concrete , plaster or tile adhesive is referred to as setting time. During this time, the mixed building material solidifies and sticks or hardens to form a component.
