Abdülcelil Levnî , also Abdülcelil Çelebi , (* in the 17th century in Adrianople, today Edirne ; † 1732 in Constantinople ) was an Ottoman painter. He is considered one of the most important painters of the tulip era . His stage name Levnî is derived from the Arabic word for color Levn.

Life

Levnî was probably born in Adrianople around 1680 and went to Constantinople at a young age, where he studied painting at the Art Academy of the Topkapı Palace . Under the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa II , he became chief court painter and kept this position under Ahmed III.

Levnî primarily documented court life in his paintings. With more than 100 miniature illustrations, he illustrated the volume of poems Surname-i Vehbi by the Ottoman poet Vehbi . Many of his paintings are portraits of the rulers Mustafa II and Ahmed III. and their families.
