A defensive violation is a wound in a person, the presence of which indicates an argument.

This term is mainly used in forensic medicine .

A distinction is made between active and passive defensive injuries. An active defense violation arises from the active resistance of a victim. The wound resulting from protective behavior (e.g. when the head or body is covered by limbs) is referred to as a passive defensive injury.

The absence of defensive violations in a violent crime can be an indication of a surprise attack in which the victim had no opportunity to defend himself. In addition, this can be an indication that the victim was defenseless (e.g. unconscious or asleep).
