Adagio for violoncello and piano (Prokofiev)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adagio op. 97a for violoncello and piano from Cinderella is a chamber music work by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev , published in 1944 and an arrangement of Prokofiev's ballet music for Cinderella (1945).

Prokofiev's Adagio op. 97 for violoncello and piano comes from the ballet Cinderella and is a transcription, adapted for violoncello and piano. The work was created between 1940 and 1944; the arrangement for a melody instrument with accompaniment is closely linked to the tenth and last Adagio movement of the piano pieces op. 97, hence the name op. 97a. The music of the Adagio op. 97a for violoncello and piano refers to a love duet between Cinderella and the Prince from the 2nd act of the ballet; There, too, the soft, sensual theme of the C major adagio can be heard in the cellos. The Adagio premiered on April 19, 1944, when it was broadcast on Moscow Radio.
