Adaptive delta modulation

The adaptive delta modulation ( ADM ) is a modulation method for converting analog to digital signals.

The analog signal is sampled at equal intervals. As with the usual, linear delta modulation , information is stored for each sample value about how much higher or lower than a comparison value the sample value is. In contrast to linear delta modulation, however, it is not the immediately preceding sample value that is selected as the comparison value, but a value calculated according to a specific algorithm which is already close to the sample value to be expected.

The advantage lies in the higher dynamics that this method offers compared to known AD converters with the same digital resolution . In contrast to the usual delta modulation, with the ADM method the step height adapts itself adaptively to the signal course.
