Adobe Edge Animate (formerly just Adobe Edge ) is software from the US software company Adobe Inc. It provides a graphical interface for designing and moving objects on websites . These objects can be animated with the help of HTML5 , JavaScript and CSS 3 . On November 30, 2015, Adobe announced that Edge Animate would not be further developed. According to the information from Adobe, the functions of Edge Animate are mainly to be taken over by Adobe Animate CC (formerly Adobe Flash Professional), with which animations can be developed both on the basis of Flash and for HTML5.

publication

In August 2011, the manufacturer first published a preview version on its own web platform, Adobe Labs .

After further preliminary versions, he published the preview version 6 on May 5, 2012 , which offers some changes. For example, expanded options have been given in the internal code editor and reusable objects (symbols) can be created. Browser compatibility has also been improved.

criticism

Chris Coyier and Chris Mills criticized regarding the release Preview 2 September 2011 that Adobe Edge Animate non-semantic HTML - markup generated. Mills added that the program was almost an abuse of common web standards (Original: " [...] Edge is a bit of an abuse of web standards and best practices, and isn't the best way to do things going forward . ").

With the introduction of Firefox version 14 in July 2012, Mozilla changed its CSS implementation. As a result, moving animations created with Adobe Edge Animate no longer work as of Firefox 14. Since the release of Adobe Edge preview 6.1 on July 25, 2012, this problem should be resolved.

background

The program aims to facilitate the programming of complex animations and interactions of HTML objects. The web designer is given the opportunity to work exclusively with the graphical interface of Adobe Edge Animate . The HTML and Javascript programmer is given the opportunity to manipulate the properties of Edge objects with their own code, both via the code editor and via external JavaScripts.

Development as an alternative to Adobe Flash

With Adobe Flash , animated and interactive content can be integrated into websites. On mobile devices and operating systems, such as devices with Apple iOS , there is no native support for the playback of Flash content. In order to be able to offer a cross-platform development environment for Flash-like, animated content that can be run on modern (mobile) browsers as well as on common web browsers, Adobe decided to develop Adobe Edge Animate.
