Advance Organizer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Advance Organizer (also known as the Pre-Organizer ) is an element of the text design that is intended to make it easier for the reader to grasp the text content. It is at the beginning of a text and provides an overview of the following content. Advance Organizers are used in particular in teaching texts, scientific papers and technical documentation . The “ Advance Organizer” (a preceding order) should not be confused with the “Advance d Organizer” (an advanced order).

Mode of action

The Advance Organizer is not intended to be a mere summary of the following text, but rather to prepare the reader for the following topics. In this way, the prior knowledge relevant for understanding the text should be stimulated in advance, i.e. the relevant concepts should be activated in the long-term memory . This preparatory measure should lead to a better and more efficient processing of the text.

The concept of the advance organizer was researched by David Paul Ausubel in the 1960s on the basis of the effect of teaching texts. On the basis of experiments in which text comprehension was compared with and without the Advance Organizer, he was able to a. show how Advance Organizers can promote learning. In addition to the Advance Organizer as a preceding explanation of the text content, the Concurrent Organizer (marginal notes / marginal notes ) and Post Organizer , a summary / memo, also proved to be helpful for understanding the text.

example

In a manual for using a cell phone, the chapter "Telephoning with the cell phone" could start with an Advance Organizer in the following form:

"The following chapter explains three ways in which you can make calls with your mobile phone."
