Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names ( ACAN or US-ACAN ; German  Advisory Committee for Antarctic Names ) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names and is responsible for recommending names for geographical features in Antarctica . The US does not recognize territorial boundaries in Antarctica, so ACAN assigns names across the continent, consulting other national bodies for nomenclature as appropriate.

In 1943 the predecessor institution Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN) was founded.
