Aeroflot flight 2808 was an international scheduled flight of Aeroflot from Donetsk to Ivanovo , in which on August 27, 1992 a Tupolev Tu-134A collided with trees three kilometers from the runway and subsequently crashed. There were no survivors among the 77 passengers and seven crew members.

Flight history

The Tupolev Tu-134A took off from Donetsk at 9:03 p.m. local time (8:03 p.m. CET). At 10:27 p.m. local time (9:27 p.m. CET) the crew began their approach to land at Ivanovo Airport . In Ivanovo at the time there was bad weather with a visibility of around 1,200 meters, haze, drizzle and the cloud base at a height of 110 meters. The crew deviated from the prescribed approach procedure and were 8,600 meters from the runway instead of 400 meters at 500 meters. Furthermore, there was a lateral deviation of the flight route of 1,900 meters at a flight speed of 390 km / h and the flaps or stabilizer were not yet aligned for landing. None of the pilots reported the altitude or speed to air traffic control. Air traffic control, on the other hand, suggested that the pilot align the flaps to 20 ° and fly a curve in order to be aligned with the runway. The crew ignored this and continued their approach. The Ground Proximity Warning System then sounded at a height of 350 meters . The crew showed no reaction to this either. 4,500 meters from the runway, the aircraft was only at an altitude of 200 meters. In order to achieve correct alignment, the captain tried to turn the aircraft to the right. However, this had the consequence that the vertical speed increased to 15-16 m / s. When the aircraft was only at a height of 80 meters, air traffic control tried to convince the captain to perform a go- around maneuver . Two seconds after this last communication, the captain had probably seen trees and tried to pull the Tupolev up. This maneuver failed and the aircraft collided with trees about 3,000 meters from the runway at a speed of 370 km / h. This collision tore off the right wing and the aircraft hit the ground 500 meters later. None of the 77 inmates survived the impact.

examination

The investigation names the decision of the captain to continue the landing process regardless of the bad weather conditions as the main cause of the accident. The inadequate communication between the pilots and with air traffic control also contributed to the crash.
