The African Virtual University (AVU) is not a university in the conventional sense, but a satellite-based distance education or e-learning program, the aim of which is to enable sub-Saharan African countries to access international educational resources and in this way to enable them to do so support the training of scientists, engineers, technicians and business people who are capable of driving and promoting the economic development of their respective countries. This is intended to increase the number of students across Africa.

The AVU is currently coordinating a network between 53 African partner institutions in 27 African countries and is connected to a network of leading universities. In this way, information and communication technology (ICT) should be disseminated and processed in order to support and improve the opportunities for education and training in the regional member countries (RMCs).

Particular consideration is given to:

  1. the establishment of learning centers and their communication options with AVU partner institutions
  2. teacher training and its own development program
  3. the emphasis on the idea of equality in and at the AVU

In 2006 the number of registered students is around 3000.
