al-Abwab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Abwab (English El-Abwab ) was a medieval, Christian kingdom in what is now Sudan .

Little is known about al-Abwab so far. It mostly only appears in Arabic sources, in which the kings of Makuria are mentioned several times . With repeated Arab attacks on Makuria, its rulers fled to al-Abwab, whereby this state often sided with the Arabs and surrendered the rulers seeking protection in El-Abwab to the Arabs.

The northern border of al-Abwab was probably on the 5th Nile cataract . It appears to have been a vassal kingdom of Alwa . Only one king of al-Abwab is known by name: Adur. He ruled around 1286 to around 1292.
