Alabama Territory

The Alabama Territory was a historic territory of the United States that was created from the eastern portion of the Mississippi Territory on March 3, 1817 , just before Mississippi became a state .

The Alabama Territory was the only United States territory to have a capital, St. Stephens on the Tombigbee River , and a Territorial Governor, William Wyatt Bibb .

Alabama was accepted into the union as the 22nd US state on December 14, 1819, almost two years after it was founded .
