Alan Richard Moon (born November 18, 1951 in Southampton ) is a British game designer living in the USA . It received the Game of the Year award twice .

Life

In 1967 Moon moved to Canada and two years later to the United States. After involuntary military service in the Vietnam War , he studied English and theater studies at Kean College in New Jersey , which he graduated in 1979. While at college, he began writing articles for Avalon Hills game magazine The General Magazine . After completing his studies, he was hired as a deputy editor and then also the main editor in charge. He realized that game development was more his thing and so he worked in the development department at Avalon Hill. After working in the video game development group at Parker Brothers from 1983 to 1984 , he decided to become a freelance game writer. He worked on his own ideas and tried to accommodate them in the much larger market of the German cultural area with game publishers, albeit with little success. Therefore he founded the White Wind publishing house in 1991 with Peter Gehrmann alias Mick Ado in order to be able to publish his own games in small editions. He hoped that other publishers would become aware of his games and then publish them on a larger scale. Since the publisher was not particularly successful, he became head of game development at the North American department of FX Schmid in 1996/1997 in order to establish a series of FX Schmid games on the market. After FX Schmid was bought by Ravensburger , he became Director of Games at Ravensburger USA.

Breakthrough as a game designer

After White Wind was dissolved in 1997, Amigo asked Moon if he could develop a simplified version of the 1992 White Wind game Elfenroads . The result Elfenland was Game of the Year in 1998 and that marked the beginning of Moon's breakthrough as a game designer. He has been a full-time game inventor since 2000. In 2004, a game of Moon became game of the year for a second time.

From 2003 to 2005, Moon was the first chairman of the game designers guild . Alan R. Moon has been married to his wife, Janet Niver, since February 14, 2004.
