The Albatros C.III was a two-seat fighter reconnaissance aircraft produced by the Berliner Albatros Flugzeugwerke during the First World War .
development
The C.III was the most popular two-seater model from Albatros and its design basically corresponded to its predecessor, the Albatros CI . The difference was in the approximate wingspan between the upper and lower wings, but above all in the newly designed tail unit . Instead of angular tail surfaces, rounded shapes were introduced. A synchronized Spandau machine gun , which was attached to the engine and operated by the pilot, was used as armament . A second rotating Parabellum machine gun could be used by the observer for defense.
The license production of the C.III also took place by DFW , Hansa-Brandenburg , Linke-Hofmann , LVG and Siemens-Schuckert . Some of the machines were delivered with the Mercedes D III engine .
commitment
The C.III appeared on the western front at the end of 1916 and did very well there as a fighter reconnaissance aircraft. An additional offensive feature was a small bomb bay between the two cockpits. However, since there was a lack of powerful bomb aiming devices, this brought little tactical gain.
18 C.III were delivered to the Bulgarian armed forces in August 1916 . The machines were destroyed under the terms of the Versailles Treaty by order of the Inter-Allied Military Control Commission (IMKK) in 1920. 1926–1927 the Bulgarian DAR assembled two C.III under the designation DAR-2 from the parts of the destroyed machines that were still there .
