Alexander Grant Barry (born August 23, 1892 in Astoria , Oregon , †  December 28, 1952 in Portland , Oregon) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Oregon in the US Senate .

Lawyer, soldier and local politician

Alexander Barry attended public schools in his hometown of Astoria and Portland. He then enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received his first degree. He then studied at the Law School of the University of Oregon , which at that time was still in Portland, law . After moving law school to the main campus of Eugene University , Barry moved to the newly created Northwest College of Law in Portland. There he passed his exam, whereupon he was inducted into the bar in 1917 and began practicing in Portland.

The following year, Barry joined the US Army and fought in the First World War . He was made a second lieutenant in the artillery and was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in France.

In addition to his practice as a lawyer, Barry also held several public offices in Oregon from 1932. He first became a member of the State Emergency Aid Committee and stayed that way until 1933. He then worked until 1935 in the Oregon Liquor Control Commission , a state authority to control alcohol sales after prohibition was lifted . He also served as chairman of a local school board from 1937 to 1938.

Senator and MP

Frederick Steiwer , Republican US Senator for Oregon, resigned on January 31, 1938. Thereupon the Democrat Alfred E. Reames was appointed as his successor in a temporary capacity. In the by-election on November 8 of the same year, Reames did not run again; this then decided Alexander Barry for himself. He took up office in Washington the next day and remained there until January 3, 1939. He did not run for the next full term in office; the mandate fell to Rufus C. Holman .

After leaving the Senate, Barry initially worked as a lawyer again. In 1944 he was then elected to the Oregon House of Representatives , where he represented Portland and Multnomah Counties as an MP. He held this mandate from 1945 to 1949. Alexander Barry died in Portland three years after leaving Parliament.
