Life

AS Dodonow was born into a Russian working-class family and after completing a seven-class school he worked in the Yaroslavl factory "Krasny Perewal". In 1929 he joined the Red Army and in 1933 graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School . Since the spring of 1940 Dodonov served in the 14th TBAP (14th Heavy Bombing Regiment) of the 18th AD (18th Aviation Division) in Borispol near Kiev . Before the start of the war, this unit was the only one in the entire USSR, in which from September 1939 the new TB-7 (Petlyakov Pe-8) heavy long-range bomberswere flown. Dodonow was one of the first five pilots in his regiment to receive type approval for the TB-7 and thus to begin test flights on the bomber. After the start of the war, he was in the 412th DBAP (also on TB-7) from July 1941, where he initially served as a copilot. In May 1942 Dodonov became the commander of a Pe-8 bomber and since the end of June 1942 he was the squadron commander of the 746th DBAP, which was part of the 45th AD of the ADD. In February 1943 he was the first 45th AD aviator to perform 100 combat missions on the Pe-8. On March 25, 1943, he was finally awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union ( Medal No. 913). In total, Dodonov flew 134 combat missions on the Petlyakov Pe-8 and, according to statements from his comrades, was considered one of the most effective and reliable pilots in the division. In the complicated long-range attacks against Königsberg alone , he crossed the target six times.

After his demobilization in 1946, Dodonov flew in the Soviet polar air fleet. After being transferred to the reserve, he lived in Moscow, where he died on May 13, 1994.
