Ali N. Askin ( Turkish: Ali N. Aşkın ; * 1962 in Munich ) is a German composer , arranger , music producer , keyboard player and electronic musician .

Career

Born in Munich as the son of Turkish immigrants, Askin completed his studies in composition at the Munich University of Music and a guest study at the Munich University of Television and Film .

The musician, who meanwhile also lived in Wuppertal and Los Angeles, has lived in Berlin since 2001 .

He works in a wide variety of musical fields, from compositions for concerts to film and television music . Just include electronic music , club tracks and remixes as well as chamber music works and broadcasting - and incidental music to his work. The freelance musician, who has been working as a freelance musician since 1987, has composed among others for ZDF , ARTE , BR radio play and media art , Zürcher Schauspielhaus , Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and Münchner Kammerspiele .

Askin is a member of the German Film Academy .

Artistic highlights

As an instrumentalist, he appeared in various bands and projects. From 1991 to 1993 he was Frank Zappa's assistant for the project The yellow shark and then worked for the Zappa Family Trust in Los Angeles .

From 1993, Askin also worked increasingly with the musician, composer, radio play author and director Heiner Goebbels , e. B. with Surrogate Cities and The Repetition. Together with the performance artist Anna Deavere Smith , he also realized and composed the collage Twilight LA (1999), which received international awards. In 2001 a radio piece by the musician Flaubert oriental - Meganekrolopolis, realized together with Markus Vanhoefer , "a radio piece based on Gustave Flaubert's travel diary about his journey to the Orient in the years 1849-51" with Ben Becker in the leading role, also appeared as an audio book CD .

Askin u. a. the music for Another League (2004) by Buket Alakuş and Lost Children (2005). In 2005-06, Askin's film music was created for the later award-winning ARD series Turkish for Beginners , which was also released on DVD and entered its second season in 2007. In 2008 he received the German Film Prize for his work on the children's film Leroy . Two years later he was nominated again for the film award for Salami Aleikum .
