All Saints Chapel Grenchen

The All Saints Chapel , also known colloquially as “Chappeli”, is located at Allerheiligenstrasse 214 in Grenchen in the Swiss canton of Solothurn .

The chapel was built between 1682 and 1683. It has a rich baroque interior, with three distinctive, richly decorated baroque altars from the year 1700. The benches attract a lot of attention because they are already infested with the common rodent beetle and date from 1683. The chapel is also a popular wedding venue.

history

Interior

French troops looted the entire chapel in 1798. The last chaplain of the All Saints Church, Peter Kaspar Lorenz, resigned in 1807. The chaplain house was sold in 1811 and has been privately owned ever since. The Christian Catholics celebrated their services in Chappeli from 1882 to 1902. An attached barn was converted into an apartment building in 1900 and no longer exists today.

Bells

The All Saints Chapel has two bells, a large one on the right and a smaller one on the left. They have to be operated manually and are only used for weddings today.

Renovations

In 1754 the old side chapel was renovated and equipped with a new altar. When the ceiling of the chapel was restored in 1864, a picture of a Madonna by Hans Holbein the Younger from 1522 came to light. Today the painting that bears the name “Solothurn Madonna” is in the Solothurn Art Museum. 136 years later, in 2000, the interior and exterior renovation that had long been necessary was carried out. Since then, the chapel has been open to the public again, although opening times have been set.

Restaurant of the same name

In 2014 the “Chappeli” excursion restaurant was opened at Allerheiligenstrasse 218 next to the All Saints Chapel.
