The old Schaal in Aarau

The Alte Schaal was the medieval slaughterhouse in the city of Aarau in Switzerland . The building is located on the outer corner of Metzgergasse and thus forms the northern end of the line of sight from Pelzgasse to Metzgergasse.

history

The current building dates back to the middle of the 16th century. However, this cannot be the first Schaal in the city, which was mentioned in a document as early as the 14th century. In 1546 the city bought a house "next to the court" (today's Stadthöfli) and set up a butcher's shop there. The building did not get its present appearance until the 17th century at the earliest, as the city prospectus from 1671 still shows it with a gable roof and eaves facing the street. The cross gable with the round must have been added later. The arches on which the round rests are carved. The slaughterhouse was on the ground floor.

On the first floor was the hall of the cloth arbor, where cloth merchants used to be able to spread their goods on market days. Until the casino opened in 1831, theater performances by traveling actors were also held here. When the new slaughterhouse on Rohrerstrasse opened in 1932, operations in the city were shut down and a fire department depot was set up on the ground floor. This in turn gave way to a restaurant in 1963. Since a renovation in 1974, the small theater Tuchlaube has been housed in the building; it is also used by a cafeteria and the Aarau jazz club.

building

On the ground floor, the hall opens up to the alley with two squat and low pointed arches. The first floor has three late Gothic windows facing the street. The two outer cross- frame windows have a straight lintel, the middle one is slightly curved. The former elevator opening, which is now designed as a window, is located in the middle under the protruding roof. The facade paintings are by Max Burgmeier and Ernest Bolen. As is usual with old town houses in Aarau, the underside of the round is also painted on the Alte Schaal.
