Premoscovite Period of Old Russian Literature
The Old Russian period in Old Russian literature roughly spans the time of the Kiev Empire . It begins with the beginnings of Russian literature in the 10th century or the development of literature as a consciously artistically designed word in the 11th century and ends in the 14th century after the collapse of the Kiev Empire and the rise of Moscow as a new center of power in the Muscovite period .
Important works from this period include the Nestor Chronicle , the Igor Song , the Daniil Lamentations , the epic about the Battle of the Don and the Novgorod Codex, the oldest East Slavic book of all .
