Ham radio gateway

An amateur radio gateway is an interface converter that connects an amateur radio device to a computer network.

It usually consists of a miniature computer that consists of hardware and software. The software must support the communication protocols used (on the amateur radio side and on the computer network side).

Communication protocols used

The communication protocols APCO 25 (Motorola), C4FM (Yaesu), DMR (Japan Amateur Radio League), D-Star (Icom), NXDN (Kenwood) and XLX multi-protocol are used, among others.

The DMR (digital mobile radio) communication protocol works in amateur radio with four radio networks: Brandmeister network, DMR-Marc-Net, DMR-Plus with IPSC2 servers and Phoenix-Net.

The communication protocol C4FM is used in the three radio networks FCS server, Wires-X (Yaesu network) and YSF server.

OpenSpot

The manufacturer SharkRF brought the amateur radio gateway modem OpenSpot 1 onto the market in 2016. This modem is connected to a router with a patch cable. Its successor, OpenSpot 2, connects to a WiFi router via WiFi.

PI-Star amateur radio modem

The PI-Star amateur radio modem consists of a Raspberry Pi , a multi-mode digital voice modem (MMDVM) and the associated software. The MMDVM is connected to the GPIO port of the Raspberry Pi. The MMDVM connects to a WLAN router via WLAN.
