Office for Turks Abroad

The Office for Turks Abroad or Office for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (Yurtdışı Türkler ve Akraba Topluluklar Başkanlığı (YTB)), translated: Presidium for Turks Abroad and Related Communities , is a legally created instrument of the diaspora policy of the Turkish Republic.

Tasks and establishment

The office was legally established on April 6, 2010. At first it was directly subordinate to the Prime Minister. Today it is subordinate to the President of the Republic.

Tasks and target groups are defined as follows:

1. The task of the YTB is to develop cooperation with Turkish nationals, people of Turkish origin and their associations abroad and to coordinate activities.

2. The office also works with the Muslims in the Balkans, who historically shared geography and culture with the Turks.

3. The Office assists Muslim students from the Turkic Republics and the Balkans to study in Turkey. The YTB is intended to offer prospective academics various educational opportunities and to maintain contact with them even after they graduate.

4. The office is supposed to support organizations of people of Turkish origin abroad in their efforts for political participation in the respective host country and to help them to intensify their relations with Turkey.

The office has about 300 employees.

Alongside the Diyanet , the YTB is the most important instrument of the Turkish Republic for diaspora politics and foreign influence. The YTB maintains a dense network of representatives in almost all European countries who act as a political interface between Ankara and Turkish organizations abroad.
