Anaplastology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anaplastology is the science of restoring a person's body image after disfiguring accidents, operations or congenital malformations with a suitable replacement (e.g. an epithesis ) or cosmetic measures as faithfully as possible. This is to prevent stigmatization of those affected and the associated psychological consequences.

In addition to the technical challenges, psychological effects are also relevant in anaplastology, e.g. B. how well the patient emotionally accepts his suffering and the epithesis. If a facial reconstruction is designed to be realistic, but does not match the person concerned in terms of type, proportions or symmetry, the effect of the uncanny valley can result. In this case, the patient's appearance is perceived as strange by other people and is therefore more noticeable.
