Andreas Karl Engel (* 1961 in Villingen ) is a German brain researcher .

Life

Engel graduated from the Hindenburg-Gymnasium Trier in 1979 and studied medicine at the Saarland University in Homburg from 1979 to 1982 . From 1982 to 1986 he continued studying medicine at the Technical University of Munich and at the same time worked at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry from 1983 to 1987 . He was with the work changes in isoenzymes of acetylcholinesterase during regeneration of motor neurons doctorate and studied from 1987 to 1990 philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since 2011, Engel and Christian Gerloff (Neurology UKE) have been leading the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center 936 “Multi-Site Communication in the Brain”.

Research topics

Engel became known for his work on the attachment problem . Together with Wolf Singer and other scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research , he was able to show that the synchronization of neural signals is of fundamental importance for the integration of information in the brain . The research of Engel and his group shows that neural synchronization processes are important for perception , attention and even the emergence of consciousness . They are also important for the integration of signals between different sensory channels and between sensory and motor systems. Current research at the Engel Institute deals with the neurobiology of perception and consciousness, with the neural mechanisms of intermodal and sensorimotor integration as well as with disorders of neural integration mechanisms in neurological and psychiatric diseases such as B. Parkinson's disease or schizophrenia .
