Anna S. Þorvaldsdóttir , also Anna Thorvaldsdottir (born July 11, 1977 in Reykjavík ), is an Icelandic composer and winner of the 2012 Nordic Council Music Prize .

Live and act

Anna Þorvaldsdóttir's mother and aunt were music teachers. She started playing the cello at an early age and began composing at the age of 19. She studied composition at the Reykjavík Academy of Music and at the University of California, San Diego , where she earned a PhD in 2011. She wrote works for symphony and chamber orchestras as well as the opera Ur_.

In 2011 her debut album Rhízôma was released with the orchestral work Dreaming, for which she was awarded the Music Prize of the Nordic Council. The album Aerial followed in 2014 and In the Light of Air in 2015 .
