Anti-skimming

Anti-skimming is a defense against fraudulent manipulation of ATMs . The attempt at manipulation is known as skimming .

Technical anti-skimming options

Today there are different anti-skimming methods to make skimming more difficult or to prevent it:

  • The attachment of skimming modules should be made more difficult mechanically (so-called front-end protection).
  • Skimming modules are to be detected electronically, and the ATM is taken out of service in the event of attacks.
  • The reading of the magnetic strips is prevented electronically, the ATM remains in operation.
  • Reading out the magnetic stripes is made more difficult by a non-linear card feed ( jittering ).

Anti-skimming by the machine user

Each user of ATMs is also recommended that in the PIN cover -Input the PIN keypad with your free hand against spying. However, this does not protect against dummy keypad that are glued over the actual keypad and simply record the keystrokes.
