Antonius Hospital
The Antonius-Spital is a former hospital in Gmünd in Carinthia , which today houses a museum.
history
The hospital was first mentioned in a document in 1340 as "built and donated here by the western citizens". The monumental building dates from the end of the 14th century. The simple exterior fronts are accentuated by a high pointed arch gate and frescoes from the 15th century with scenes from the life of St. Elisabeth . They were exposed in 1974.
The entrance hall has a groin vault on two mighty central columns. The upper floor was damaged in the city fire of 1504 and renewed under Leonhard von Keutschach . Two frescoes showing the Annunciation and the Nativity were uncovered in the former chapel. During the external restoration in 1993, remarkable early baroque architectural decor was exposed.
Built as a hospital, it later served as an urban retirement home and, after careful renovation by the architect Eva Rubin, now houses the Pankratium , a museum dedicated to the human senses.
