Antony Monastery (Novgorod)
The Antonius Monastery (Russian Антониев монастырь ) was an Orthodox monastery in Novgorod in Russia . It consisted of 1106 to 1920. The complex counts since 1992 for World Heritage of UNESCO , together with the old town of Veliky Novgorod.
history
It was founded in 1106 by the monk Antonius of Rome (Antoni Rimljanin). From 1117 to 1119 the Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin Mary was built. It was not until 1131 that the monastery was officially consecrated by Archbishop Niphont .
In 1740 a spiritual seminary was opened in the monastery. In 1918 it was closed. In 1920 the monastery was closed.
Today the area belongs to the Novgorod museums, some buildings are used by the Novgorod University (formerly the Pedagogical Institute).
