Anubis is a block encryption algorithm developed by Vincent Rijmen and Paulo SLM Barreto . It uses a block size of 128 bits and keys with key lengths of 128 to 320 bits. The standard key length is 128 bits and can be changed in 32-bit steps within the specified limit values.

Anubis was one of the candidates for the NESSIE project .

The number of rounds depends on the key length (12 rounds with 128 bit key length up to 18 rounds with 320 bit). The Anubis algorithm is not patented .

Anubis belongs to the same family of block ciphers as the winner of the AES competition RIJNDAEL .

Vincent Rijmen and Paulo SLM Barreto opted for this name because Anubis is the god of the soul guide into the realm of the dead and brings the dead into the crypt . In addition, the English word "encrypt" means "to encrypt" in German.
