Apararea Patriei

The order Apărarea Patriei ( German  Defense of the Fatherland ) was founded by Decree No. 308 P-MAN on July 23, 1949. The foundation was published in Buletin Oficial No. 49. The medal could be awarded to military and civilians of Romanian as well as foreign citizenship. It rewarded unique achievements in the political and scientific fields, distinguished military achievements in organization and troop leadership and was generally given as a reward for services in the context of the defense of Romania . The award was made at the instigation of the Council of State.

Classes

The order has three classes
  1. Class, for which the medal in gold with silver swords was worn as a breast star
  2. Class, for which the medal in silver with golden swords was worn as a breast star
  3. Class, for which the medal in gold with silver swords on the pentagonal ribbon was worn on the left chest

The sign of the order, which varies in size, is a five-pointed domed star, each with rays at the angles. The award number is on the back of the awards next to the precious metal markings.

Models

1. Model 1949 - 1950

In the center of the star is the national coat of arms with the letters "RPR" for Republica Populară Romană. In the open top of the wreath of ears of the state coat of arms there is no asterisk.

2. Model 1950 - 1965

Now, based on Soviet iconography, there is a five-pointed star in the open wreath of ears. The award numbers are no longer applicable.

3rd model 1965 - 1989

After changing the form of government there are now the letters "RSR" for Republica Socialistă România.
