Apple scruffs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Apple scruffs were a small group of (mostly female) Beatles fans who regularly gathered outside the Apple building and Abbey Road Studios in hopes of meeting and talking to the Beatles . The English word 'scruffy' means 'neglected', so Apple Scruffs could be translated as 'the Apple bums'.

The Beatles themselves maintained a friendly relationship with this group. Two Apple Scruffs were even allowed to sing along to a Beatles song ( Across the Universe ) on February 4, 1968 , and George Harrison later wrote a song called Apple Scruffs that appeared on his solo album All Things Must Pass .

"Apple Scruffs, how I love you. In the fog and in the rain, through the pleasure and the pain. On the step outside you stand, with flowers in your hands. "

- George Harrison (1970) : Refrain of Apple Scruffs
