Workstation computer
A workstation computer or workstation computer is a PC that is located at a person's workstation and is used for screen work . The opposite of workstation computers are service computers (servers). Most workstation computers are classic desktop computers , but they also include notebooks , as well as fat and thin clients .
The main purpose of a workstation computer is to enable interaction with the user in application programs.
A workstation computer should be specially designed for its use. This applies to both the computing technology and the programs executed on the computer. In particular, good ergonomic properties are desirable, such as:
- low noise due to moving parts (such as hard drives , processor fans, etc.)
- high quality large format screen
- network-compatible and multi-user operating system
The program equipment usually contains a desktop environment (as is common with Microsoft Windows or especially the X Window System for Unix-like systems ) and, depending on the application, programs from the areas of graphics creation and editing, programming environments or office applications, for example .
