Armand H. Cote

Armand Horace Cote (born April 19, 1909 in Central Falls , Rhode Island , †  April 28, 1980 in Providence , Rhode Island) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1959 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Rhode Island.

Career

Nothing is known about Armand Cote's youth and schooling. He became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1934 and 1940 he was a member of the Pawtucket School Board . Professionally, he worked in the banking industry. From 1937 he was president of the Pawtucket Credit Union , in 1977 he became its chairman. From 1941 to 1957 he held the office of Secretary of State of Rhode Island. In 1948 and 1960 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , at which Harry S. Truman and later John F. Kennedy were nominated as presidential candidates. In 1952 he was a substitute delegate to the federal party conference of the Democrats.

In 1956, Cote was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, alongside Dennis J. Roberts . He held this office between 1957 and 1959. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1958 a political battle broke out between the governor and his deputy over the leadership of the Democratic Party at the state level. In 1960, Cote lost his party's gubernatorial primaries. He died on April 28, 1980 at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
