Crossbowmen or Schnepperschützen fountain

The Armbrustschützenbrunnen or Schnepperschützenbrunnen is in Nuremberg , in the Hallerwiese green area in the St. Johannis district . Its installation in 1904 was made possible by a donation from the St. Johannis Citizens' Association; its creator was the Nuremberg sculptor Leonhard Herzog (* 1863). Today the fountain acts as the creative center of this oldest green area in the city and is one of the popular art and architectural monuments of the city of Nuremberg .

On a memorial and information board set up in 1992 for the Hallerwiese - at the exit of the Hallertürlein into the park - there is the following information on the fountain on the bronze plate:

"The SCHNEPPERSCHÜTZENBRUNNEN created by / Leonhard Herzog in 1904 reminds / of the traditional crossbow shooting / which took place here until the second half of the 18th century / and the first of which was in 1487 in honor / of Emperor Frederick III."

description

A sculpturally decorated pillar made of sandstone rises from a fountain basin in the shape of a quatrefoil , with a shell-shaped, ribbed shell as a substructure. A cylindrical column rises from it, which carries the cast bronze figure of a crossbowman (Schnepperschützen) who aims his crossbow in the air. The total height of the well is about 3 m, the diameter about 2.40 m. The sculptor mainly used design elements from the late Renaissance .
