The magazine Armeerundschau , which appeared in the GDR from 1956 to 1990, was a magazine of the German Military Publishing House , which was later renamed as the Military Publishing House of the GDR . The 80 to 100 page booklet (up to 1962 in A4, then in A5 format) had a reach of 1.5 million readers with a circulation of up to 340,000 copies (the initial circulation was 11,000 copies), of which however, only five to six percent of military personnel were read.

The "ar" was the counterpart to the " People's Army ", the more military-oriented weekly newspaper of the Ministry of National Defense . It was supposed to depict everyday army life in an entertaining way, but it was also aimed at young people and soldiers' wives.

The "ar" was especially popular among soldiers because of the (though clothed) pin-ups . In July 1990, the last issue of the magazine appeared, which in the last few months of the GDR had been renamed in the subtitle "The international military magazine".

Long-time editor-in-chief was Colonel Karl-Heinz Freitag († 2013).
