Media rectal artery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arteria rectalis media (middle rectal artery)

The arteria rectalis media (middle rectal artery ) is a paired artery of the pelvic cavity . It arises on both sides from the internal iliac artery and extends above the pelvic floor to the ampulla of the rectum and supplies its wall. It also releases branches to supply the pelvic floor, in men to the prostate and vesicle glands , in women to the lower part of the vagina .

The middle rectal artery has anastomoses with the upper and lower rectal arteries , but these are so weak that if one rectal artery is occluded, adequate supply of the area concerned is not guaranteed.
