Artistic License

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Artistic License is an OSI-compliant free software license that is mainly used by Perl and most of its modules in conjunction with the GPL as a dual license . Since it allows derivatives to be placed under another, more restrictive license, it is one of the BSD-type software licenses. While version 1.0 was only certified by the OSI, version 2.0 is also FSF- compliant.

Provisions

  1. It is permitted to change the software or the code if at least one of these conditions is met:
    1. The changes will be made freely available in the public domain or otherwise
    2. The modifications are only used in-house
    3. All non-standard executables are named in such a way that the names do not conflict with those of standard software
    4. Something else is agreed with the copyright holder.
  2. It is permitted to distribute the software if at least one of the following conditions is met:
    1. A standard version of the package will be distributed along with a notice of where the package can be obtained.
    2. The source code with all modifications made is included
    3. All non-standard executables are supplied with the standard versions. In addition, the changes must be documented in man pages or a similar medium.
    4. Something else is agreed with the copyright holder.
  3. It is allowed to charge a reasonable fee for the distribution of the package. However, it is not allowed to ask for money for the package itself. It is also allowed to distribute the package together with larger software (possibly commercially), as long as it is not claimed that the package came from you if you are not the copyright holder.
  4. Scripts or libraries as input or output to / from the package are not covered by the license and can be distributed commercially.
  5. C or Perl subroutines that are linked to the package do not belong to the package.
  6. The name of the copyright holder may not be used for marketing purposes without written permission.
  7. The package is distributed as "as is", without any guarantees.

Remarks

  1. Package refers to a collection of files distributed by the licensor and derivative packages based on them.
  2. Standard version refers to a package that is in the state delivered by the licensor (i.e. has not been changed) or has been edited at his request.
