Asian handicap

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In sports betting on the principle of Asian Handicaps (short: AHC; English: Asian Handicap ) is one of the two parties with a deeper set score at the start. This handicap is the real end result adds . The specialty of the AHC is that, in contrast to the multi-way bet and the "normal" handicap bet, this type of bet returns the stake instead of a possible tie. Asian handicap betting is mainly used in football betting .

The Asian Handicap bet was developed in Asia and many bookmakers offer different forms of Asian Handicap. The elementary principle of the game is the so-called hedging against a tie, i.e. This means that in the event of a draw in a sporting event, the customer either wins the bet or gets part of his stake back, depending on the selected handicap type.

The syntax of an Asian handicap bet is as follows: The favorite of a game is marked with a negative number, the amount of which depends on the type of bet. In football bets, this number expresses the number of goals that must be deducted from the final score to determine the winners and losers. The outsider - also known as the underdog - receives a positive indicator in return.

The history of the Asian handicap

One of the first websites to offer soccer betting was Jphan. The owner Joseph Phan did not know what to call the Asian way of betting. So he sent a request to Joe Saumarez Smith. Smith replied that he thought the Asian handicap sounds good and that is how the Asian handicap (AH) gambling market came about. The name and approach soon became a success. More and more (European) bookmakers began to offer Asian handicaps as well. Not only did they adopt the name, but they also dealt with determining the quotas.

Before the bookmakers went online, the European market and the Asian market were separated to some extent. There were relatively few value beggars in Europe. These are gamblers who look at the odds and try to use them to estimate whether a bet is profitable in the long term. The European gambler, who is not a value bettor, bets mostly on favorites that he thinks will win the game.

The bookmakers adjust their odds based on this betting behavior, among other things. They ensure that the favorites' chances are relatively undervalued and those of the outsiders overrated. In Asia, however, there were value bets, so the bookmakers there were always forced to give better odds.

The advent of online betting changed everything. First of all, bookmakers could now identify customers and thus impose limits on them if they make too much profit. Second, Asian betting providers could now also bet with European bookmakers. European bookmakers with odds that were too high for outsiders had to adjust their odds or set limits for profitable bettors.

Asian handicap table

If a whole number is used for the handicap, the even final grade can lead to a tie. In the Asian Handicap, this situation is not called a draw, but a push. All bettors get their original bets back with a push, as there is no winner. The plus signs in the team results columns indicate "or more", e.g. B. "2+" means "by 2 goals or more".

Quarter Asian Handicap

Notation: Team A - Team B 0: 0.25 , Team A -0.25 or Team B +0.25 or Team A -0.5; 0.0 and Team B 0.0; +0.5

With this variant, the customer's stake is split between two Asian handicap bets. In this case, this is due to the zero Asian handicap (team B 0) and the half Asian handicap (team B +0.5).

If, for example, the customer places 100 betting units on team B +0.25, the stake is divided into 50 betting units on the Asian handicap 0 and 50 betting units on the Asian handicap +0.5. If Team A wins in this constellation, the entire bet is lost, so the player loses 100 betting units.

If the game ends in a draw, the player gets 50 betting units back for the Asian handicap 0 bet, and the half Asian handicap bet (Team B +0.5) is counted as won, and the customer receives his stake accordingly Half Asian handicap bet, in this case 50 betting units, multiplied by the corresponding odds, paid out.

If the game ends with a win for team B, the entire bet is deemed to have been won, so the player receives his entire stake, in this case 100 betting units, multiplied by the corresponding odds.

Half Asian handicap

Notation: Team A - Team B 0: 0.5 or Team B +0.5 / Team B +1.5 / Team B +2.5 etc. or Team A -0.5 / Team A -1.5 / Team A -2.5 etc.

Example: The customer bets on the handicap bets Team B +0.5, Team B +1.5 and Team A -0.5.

If team A wins by one goal, the tips team B +1.5 and team A -0.5 win. The bet team B +0.5 loses. If team A wins by 2 or more goals, only the tip team A -0.5 is rated as won. If the game ends in a draw, the picks Team B +0.5 win, Team B +1.5, the bet Team A -0.5 loses again. If team B wins, the picks Team B +0.5 and Team B +1.5 are counted as won.

Whole Asian handicap

Notation: Team A - Team B 0: 1 or Team A -1 or Team B +1 / Team A -2 or Team B +2 etc.

With this type of Asian handicap bet there is the possibility of a tie in the outcome of the bet. The Whole Asian Handicap is offered by many bookmakers and betting providers, making it the most common handicap bet. Because of the entire handicap, there is the possibility of a tie. In the event of a tie, the stake is returned. If team A wins by one goal, the bet team A -1 or team B +1 ends in a draw, i.e. with stakes back. (Example: Team A wins 2: 1, as a result of the handicap A -1, a goal is deducted from Team A, so the game ends in a 1: 1 draw) However, the bet Team A -2 or Team B +2 is counted as won. If team A wins by two goals, the tip team A -1 wins. If the outcome of the game is a tie, the bet team B +1 or team B +2 and higher bets wins. If Team B wins, the same tips win as if it is a draw.

Zero Asian Handicap

Notation: Team A 0 or Team B 0

With this type of Asian handicap bet, the customer gets his stake back in the event of a tie. If team A wins, team A wins 0, team B wins, team B wins 0.

Live Asian Handicaps

The handicaps given above are also offered "live" by various European and Asian bookmakers , ie during the game. The specialty of Live Asian Handicaps is that the handicap mostly only relates to the remaining time of the game, i.e. it only counts from the score at the time the bet was placed until the end of the game. In this case, the virtual score is always 0: 0 when the bet is placed. For example, if you play an Asian Handicap Team A -0.5 (score 1: 0) , you only win your bet if Team A wins by two goals. In all other cases, the bookmaker wins, including if it stays 1-0.

The origin of the term "Asian Handicap"

Asian handicaps existed on the Asian betting market long before this type of betting took hold in Europe, and was known there under the name Hang Cheng . The term was popularized by Joe Saumarez Smith (who wrote an article about gambling for the American site Vegas Inside at the time), who suggested "Asian Handicap" when asked by an Asian website operator for a corresponding English term. The consistent use of the term on this website has been picked up by spread betting companies such as the IG Index and in this way spread throughout the bookmaking industry.

Difference to the European handicap

Many bookmakers also offer the so-called European handicap . In contrast to the Asian handicap, there are three starting options. In addition to victory and defeat, you can also bet on a draw.
